Miramar Beach sits at the heart of the Emerald Coast. With pristine white sand shores and crystal-clear turquoise water, Miramar Beach is a true beachfront paradise.

The community of 30A is tucked away along the slow residential streets, far from the grit and party of Panama City Beach and its super highways. Stretching from Rosemary Beach to Dune Allen, 30A is an upscale area that features soft sugar-white sand, clear Gulf water, and luxurious vacation homes.

What truly sets this community apart is how much sits within just a quick drive of the water. Outlet shopping, a full golf resort, and an uncrowded beach are all a few minutes apart.

Sand Dollar One has homes and condos scattered throughout the 30A area, but Miramar Beach has some of our favorites. Browse our Miramar Beach vacation rentals to find the perfect base to fit your trip.

Here’s what to expect when you stay in Miramar Beach on your next family adventure.

Getting to Know Miramar Beach

  • Best for: Families and large groups
  • Nearest airport: Destin Fort Walton Beach Airport, about 25 miles away
  • Getting around: Car, bike, or street-legal golf cart

Miramar Beach is a stunning, absolutely postcard-worthy coastal community in Walton County, tucked between Destin to the west and the 30A corridor to the east. Scenic Gulf Drive runs right along the water, with Highway 98 only a few blocks north.

Here is the part that trips travelers up. Miramar Beach is one of South Walton's sixteen beach neighborhoods, but it does not sit directly on the Scenic Highway 30A. Rather, it's part of what is collectively known as the 30A communities due to the close proximity.

The 30A Scenic Highway itself begins roughly fifteen minutes east at Dune Allen Beach and runs for about 15 miles to Rosemary Beach.

That in-between location is the whole appeal for many visitors. You are about fifteen minutes from downtown Destin in one direction and about fifteen minutes from the western end of 30A in the other.

Getting to Miramar Beach

Destin Fort Walton Beach Airport, in neighboring Okaloosa County, is roughly 25 miles west, about 35 to 45 minutes away from Miramar Beach. Also nearby is Northwest Florida Beaches International, near Panama City Beach, about 45 miles east and a little over an hour’s drive.

If the geography of the area is new to you, our guide to what 30A is walks through the corridor town by town.

Best Time to Visit Miramar Beach

Thanks to Florida's tropical climate, you can easily visit Miramar Beach year-round and expect warm, pleasant weather, but there are certainly times of year that are busier or more favorable than others depending on your travel style.

Late spring is the sweet spot. The Gulf has warmed up, the crowds have not fully arrived, and the outdoor patios are comfortable all evening. It's also not a wild Spring Break destination and maintains its family-friendly atmosphere throughout March and April, unlike nearby Panama City Beach and its rowdy clubs.

Summer is the peak season for a reason, with warm Gulf water for swimming and the fullest calendar of events at Baytowne Wharf. It is also when Highway 98 slows to a crawl and the beach access points fill early, so plan mornings accordingly.

Fall is the quiet favorite. Warm water temperatures hold into October, and you can usually find a stretch of sand to yourself on a weekday.

Winter is mild rather than warm, and it belongs to walkers, cyclists, and anyone who wants the beach empty. Plenty of restaurants stay open for dining, though hours can change.

Why Stay in Miramar Beach?

Every beach community on this coast has a personality. Miramar Beach is the practical, family-friendly one, and that is meant as a compliment. Here are some of the reasons visitors love Miramar Beach.

1. Easy Beach Access

Not one but two Walton County regional beach accesses serve this stretch of coast.

Miramar Beach Regional Beach Access is the larger of the two, with roughly 200 parking spaces, restrooms, an accessible boardwalk, and beach wheelchairs.

Scenic Gulf Drive Regional Beach Access is the newer and smaller option, with about eighteen vehicle spaces plus nine dedicated golf cart spaces and a picnic pavilion.

Lifeguard towers along Miramar Beach are staffed from early March through the end of October.

The beaches are accessible day and night. Walk the waterline after dark with a flashlight, and you will find ghost crabs skittering across the dry sand above the tideline, which reliably entertains kids and adults alike.

2. Lots of Outdoor and Water Activities

The Gulf in Miramar is calm, shallow, and clear, which makes this a forgiving place to try something new. It's also packed with activities. Parasailing, jet skis, paddleboards, and pontoon rentals all operate along this stretch of the Gulf Coast in peak season.

Dolphin cruises are the favorite with kids, and most depart from the Destin Harbor just west of here. Boats run year-round, though sightings and sea conditions are best in the summer months.

On land, a paved trail parallels Scenic Highway 98 (distinct from Highway 98 further inland) for roughly three miles, which gives runners and cyclists a route that does not involve dodging beach traffic.

If you love to escape in nature, head to the natural haven of Topsail Hill Preserve a short drive east.

3. Shopping in Abundance

Silver Sands Premium Outlets sits on the Emerald Coast Parkway with well over a hundred name-brand stores. It is marketed as a Destin outlet center, but it is physically here in Miramar Beach.

Grand Boulevard at Sandestin is the other retail hub, an open-air center with boutiques, restaurants, and a wine shop. It’s an easy 10-minute drive away.

4. Enjoy Sandestin and The Village of Baytowne Wharf

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort covers about 2,400 acres inside Miramar Beach, with beach and bay frontage and four golf courses.

At its center is The Village of Baytowne Wharf, a pedestrian village of shops, restaurants, and bars wrapped around the bay. Live music and family events run through much of the year, and it is the closest thing to a town center in this part of South Walton.

5. You Can Get Around by Bike and Golf Cart With Ease

Street-legal golf carts are allowed on public roads posted at 35 miles per hour or less, which covers Scenic Gulf Drive and the residential streets north of it.

Highway 98 is off-limits to carts, even to cross a single block, so plan routes along the scenic drive instead. Check with your rental or condo association first, since a few communities here restrict guest carts regardless of state law.

Who Miramar Beach Is Best For

This is the right home base in 30A if your group wants different things from the same trip. One person can shop the outlets, the kids can hit the beach, you can stroll the sugar white sand, and nobody needs to negotiate.

It also suits first-time visitors to the Emerald Coast. You get white sand and clear water without committing to a busy tourist town.

It is less of a fit if you picture walking to dinner every evening from a pedestrian town square. That experience lives further east in places like Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach.
